The Power of Bottom-Up Therapies: Reconnecting Mind and Body
Sep 14, 2024In the realm of trauma healing and self-discovery, bottom-up therapies have become essential in understanding the intricate connection between mind and body. At Somatic Sovereignty, we embrace these therapies to restore balance and foster well-being by addressing the deep interplay between our physiological and psychological states.
Understanding Bottom-Up Therapies
Bottom-up therapies focus on healing by addressing the body's physiological responses rather than solely relying on cognitive or verbal processes. This approach aligns with Polyvagal Theory, introduced by Dr. Stephen Porges, which emphasizes the role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in regulating emotional and physiological states. According to Polyvagal Theory, the vagus nerve, a key component of the parasympathetic nervous system, is crucial in managing our stress response and sense of safety.
The Interconnection of Mind and Body
Traditionally, mental and physical health were often treated as separate domains. This separation emerged from a reductionist perspective that prioritized cognitive and psychological approaches while neglecting the body’s role in emotional regulation. However, research has increasingly demonstrated the inseparability of mind and body. This understanding challenges the outdated notion of mind-body separation.
Research reveals that approximately 80 - 90% of neurological signals are afferent, meaning they travel from the body to the brain shaping our mental and emotional experiences. Conversely, only about 10 - 20% of neurological signals are efferent, traveling from the brain to the body sending signals and influencing our physiological responses. This substantial dominance of afferent signals highlights the profound influence of the body on brain functions.
Feedback Loops and Healing
The continuous feedback loops between the brain and body underscore the importance of bottom-up therapies. These therapies leverage the bidirectional communication of afferent and efferent nerves to address trauma holistically. For instance, Somatic Experiencing®, NeuroAffective Touch®, trauma-aware yoga, and other body-based practices help individuals become more attuned to their bodily sensations and nervous system responses. By regularly asking, "what is my body trying to tell me with that closed throat, knot in my stomach or tight jaw?" instead of trying to manage or stop the sensation, you foster a deeper connection with your body’s innate wisdom.
Reconnecting Through Bottom-Up Therapies
At Somatic Sovereignty, our approach integrates bottom-up therapies to address trauma comprehensively. By working with your body’s responses and engaging in practices that promote physiological and emotional balance, we support you in creating a more harmonious and resilient self.
Embracing bottom-up therapies allows us to honour the natural feedback loops between mind and body, acknowledging their profound interconnection. This approach not only fosters healing but also empowers you to reclaim a sense of wholeness and well-being.
If you’re ready to explore the transformative power of bottom-up therapies and reconnect with your body’s wisdom, join a series of yoga for trauma classes, attend a 1-day retreat, journey together in nature through our Yatra nature immersions, recieve a massage or make an appointment for counselling at Somatic Sovereignty.
